Cameron Mountain Alpacas Custom yarn was spun at a specialty mill in Minnesota from 100% alpaca fiber shorn from our alpacas. We are very pleased with these yarns and they will be sold out soon. The selection includes sport to bulky in very fine natural white to a robust deep reddish brown suitable for felting from knit or crochet projects. Our 3 color grey and black is unusual and invites experiments with dyes. If you are unsure which yarn would be best for your project ask us for guidance. 100% alpaca is great for many but not all projects.
The grading system we use for these yarns is: Grade 1 : Ultrafine : less than 20 microns (fiber diameter) Grade 2 : Superfine : between 20 and 23 microns Grade 3 : Fine : between 23 and 26 microns Grade 4 : Intermediate : between 26 and 29 microns Grade 5 : Robust : between 29 and 32 microns
"Alpaca the way it should beTM" is the name of the retail product line produced by the NAAFP cooperative. By joining the coop, we benefit from economies of scale in processing and a strict quality control system: Certified Sorted. This ensures that all fiber submitted will be batched only with the same grade from other members, making a huge difference in the quality of the end product and reducing tremendously the normal loss of fiber during processing. More information about the NAAFP cooperative is on our farm web site.
Once sorted into grades, fiber is processed into the product that is best for that grade. Some fiber is best used for socks, some for hats, some for gloves, and some for handspinners' roving and on through the 10 regular grades and 8 additional roving grades. It is Alpaca The Way It Should BeTM!
These are beautiful rugs made from the fiber we produce that can not be used for yarn or roving. A small shop in Paint Rock, Texas weaves these distinctive area rugs. They are hand-loomed using our alpaca in all its splendid natural colors spun around a jute core. These rugs are soft yet durable, reversible and naturally resistant to fading and wear.
Care and Cleaning: Vacuum using a smooth surface attachment, spot clean with warm water and mild soap or rug shampoo. For safety, always use a quality foam underpad.
Browse the many styles and color themes we've had for a sampling of what is possible. We only have one of any given style but any can be duplicated in just about any size. Talk to us about making your custom rug for you! We order rugs a couple of times a year.
RUGS ARE ON DISPLAY AT BARBOURSVILLE GIFT GALLERY, a mile from our farm.
We use felting needles to create figures and ornaments. Each is handmade using alpaca fiber, frequently from an alpaca's very first shearing. If appropriate we finish with German glass eyes or noses for a totally unique item.
Wet-felting can turn a crocheted or knitted item into a sturdy fabric.
